In the wake of last week’s deadly floods in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his government will spend 15 billion dollars to help flood victims in the coming months.

In a joint statement with Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, the two leaders agreed that “it is urgent to respond to the magnitude of the calamity and the magnitude that the people of India have suffered.”

India will spend about $1.1 billion on the relief effort, which is meant to include a disaster relief fund and a disaster-relief package.

The statement comes after the government announced last week that it will spend a total of $10 billion on flood relief, the bulk of which will be spent on construction and rehabilitation of flood-damaged areas.
